Van Gogh, Arles and Les Baux-de-Provence - Full Day
On this tour we will visit the fascinating town of Arles. It's rich history pre-dates the wonderfully preserved and restored Roman arena and theatre. The town is situated at the mouth of the river Rhone and has therefore been an important strategic base throughout history.
We will visit the sites and scenery that inspired Van Gogh (1853-1890) to paint his most famous oeuvres during his two year stay in Arles & St Remy from spring 1888 to spring 1890.
Van Gogh lived in the famous Yellow House on Place Lamartine in Arles (his ear incident happened here!) and it was here that he was inspired by the light and colours of Provence to produce his finest work. We will also visit the monastery, near St-Remy-de-Provence, where Van Gogh painted over 153 of his most famous oeuvres, including Starry Night.
The Medieval village of Les Baux-de-Provence is situated in the heart of the Alpilles hills. It stands high up on a rocky plateau looking out over local vineyards and olive groves. The village and fortress can only be visited on foot. You will experience the rich cultural heritage of the village : the churches, chateau, and town hall, have all been lovingly restored. The citadel, at the summit of the village, covers an area of 7 hectares and can be visited as an option on this tour.
If requested this tour can include a visit to a local olive oil mill or winery

Testimonial: Van Gogh, Arles and Les Baux de Provence Full day Tour
Sarah is friendly and charming and extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area. She was very accommodating in arranging our special tour from Aix-en-Provence to St. Remy, Les Baux and to Arles. We were so pleased with her commentary about the towns, her insights about Vincent Van Gogh and the personalized service. Her tour was one of the highlights of our visit to Provence. We highly recommend taking a Discover Provence tour.
